Bacteriostatic Water Shelf Life & Storage: Does It Need Refrigeration?
Storage requirements depend on the manufacturer’s label . Some official bacteriostatic-water labels specify controlled room temperature (20–25 °C). After first puncture, record the date and apply the labelled in-use period; where none is stated, CDC multi-dose-vial guidance commonly uses a 28-day discard window that must not extend past the original expiry. Discard if cloudy, particulate or compromised.

Unopened storage
A sealed bacteriostatic water vial should be stored according to the printed label. An official Hospira label specifies controlled room temperature of 20–25 °C ; other manufacturers may differ. Do not assume refrigeration is required before opening unless the label says so. Keep it in its box, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Label first
Follow the printed storage temperature while the seal is intact.
Away from light
Store in the original carton to limit light exposure.
Use before expiry
The printed date applies to the sealed, unpunctured vial.
After the first puncture
The moment you pierce the stopper, the clock starts. Best practice for an opened vial:
Why 28 days?
The 0.9% benzyl alcohol is bacteriostatic — it inhibits bacterial replication but does not sterilise contamination or guarantee that a repeatedly punctured vial remains uncontaminated. The 28-day convention is an operational beyond-use limit for punctured multi-dose containers under CDC guidance unless the manufacturer states otherwise. After that, switch to a fresh vial.
28 days is a preservative-protection window, not a guarantee. If sterility is ever in doubt — a missed swab, a questionable puncture — discard early.
Storing the reconstituted peptide solution
Once you have mixed bacteriostatic water into a peptide vial, the solution has its own storage needs, which are usually stricter than the water alone:

Travel & handling
For short transport, protect vials from heat extremes according to the label. Avoid leaving vials in hot cars or direct sun. If a vial has been refrigerated because the label requires it, let it return toward room temperature before drawing if that supports even dissolution.
Sealed USP-grade bacteriostatic water
New-U ships bacteriostatic water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol in sealed multi-dose vials. Accessory documentation is separate from peptide HPLC certificates. Research use only — not for human or veterinary use.

Frequently asked questions
Not universally. Follow the exact vial label. Some official products specify controlled room-temperature storage. After first puncture, apply the manufacturer’s in-use storage requirement.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Where no different period is provided, punctured multi-dose vials are commonly discarded within 28 days under CDC guidance. The preservative inhibits bacterial growth; it does not guarantee sterility for exactly 28 days.
Refrigerate at 2–8 °C, protect from light, and follow the specific compound stability window. Avoid freezing reconstituted solutions unless the compound data supports it.
If it is cloudy, discoloured or has particles; if it is past the labelled in-use period (or the CDC multi-dose default when no period is stated); or if the stopper no longer seals or contamination is suspected. When in doubt, discard.
